Review of Stem-Changing Verbs

There are several verbs in Spanish that have a spelling change in the stem of the verb (the part before the ending).  There are four different kinds of spelling changes in the Present Indicative Tense, as shown in the chart below.  Remember that the spelling change does not occur in the nosotros and vosotros forms, because the stress does not fall on the changing vowel in those forms.

Irregular Preterite Verbs

In Etapa 1, you reviewed five irregular verbs in the preterite: ir, ser, dar, ver and hacer.  Like hacer, the following verbs have irregular stems in the preterite, but as a group they all have the same set of endings.

Note that verbs with stems that end in j drop the i of the 3rd person plural ending (as shown in red)
