Stem-Changing Verbs in the Preterite

Remember that many Spanish verbs have stem changes in the present indicative tense.  These changes take place in the singular forms (yo, tú, él/ella/usted) and in the 3rd person plural forms (ellos, ustedes).

Stem-changing -IR verbs change vowels in the preterite tense also.  However, the change only occurs in the él/ella/usted and ellos, ustedes forms:

e-->i o-->u
pedir dormir
pedí pedimos dormí dormimos
pediste pedisteis dormiste dormisteis
pidió pidieron durmió durmieron
