The Subjunctive with Expressions of Emotion

You have alreadya learned that the subjunctive is used with impersonal opinions, to express hopes and wishes, and with expressions of doubt.  It is also used to convey emotions, such as frustration or happiness.  When you express emotions, the event that you're expressing the emotion about is in the subjunctive:

Andrea says, "Me fastidia que los dependientes me traten así" - It frustrates me to be treated this way by clerks.

Andrea is certain she is frustrated, so she uses the indicative.   What she is frustrated about is the way the clerks treat her.  Since she isn't describing the actual treatment (that would have been in the indicative, me tratan) but expressing her emotion about it, she uses the subjunctive.

Note that verbs ending in -ger (like escoger) change the g to j in the subjunctive.  That is because the "ga" would be pronounced like the "ga" in garaje.  You want it to sound like the "ja" in jamónOjalá que ella escoja un buen carro.
