Grammar Summary

Spanish-2 Unidad 6 Etapa 1

The Present and Present Progressive Tenses (Review)

The Present Tense is used to describe actions that are happening now or in the near future.  The Present Progressive is used to describe and emphasize that events are happening right now.

Esta noche estudio para el exámen en álgebra y mañana estudio para el exámen en historia.  Pero ahora mismo estoy estudiando para el exámen en español.

The Impersonal se

You already know that a reflexive pronoun is used with a verb when only the subject is involved in the action of the verb.  You can use the same se when the subject does not refer to any specific person. It's called the impersonal se:

Aquí se habla español.  Spanish is spoken here (it doesn't specify who speaks it.)

Past Participles Used as Adjectives

Some adjectives may be formed from verbs.  The form you use is the past participle.  To form the past participle, drop the ending from infinitive and add the appropriate ending:

-AR Verbs -ER and -IR Verbs
-ado -ido

Remember that an adjective formed from a past participle must agree in number and gender with the noun it describes:    chico aburrido but chica aburrida

Many verbs have irregular past participles.  Some of these are:

Infinitive Past Participle
abrir abierto
decir dicho
descubrir descubierto
escribir escrito
hacer hecho
ir ido
poner puesto
romper roto
ver visto
volver vuelto
