Reported Speech

In English, when you "report" or summarize what someone has said or is saying, you say "He says that..." or "She said that..."  In Spanish, to report what someone else says or has said, you use the verb decir followed by que.

When using the present tense, dice que..., the second verb tense is either the present or the future:

Paco dice que tú eres una candidata perfecta Paco says that you are a perfect candidate
Paco dice que tú serás una candidata perfeca Paco says that you will be a perfect candidate

When using the preterite, dijo que..., you use a past tense or the conditional for the second verb:

Paco dijo que ella estaba en casa Paco said that she was at home
Paco dijo que ella fue a casa Paco said that she went home
Paco dijo que ella estaría en casa Paco said that she would be at home

But, when you want to stress that the reported action is still going on, the second verb should be in the present tense:

Paco dijo que ella busca una casa Paco said that she is (still) looking for a house
