You use prepositions to clarify locations and to show
relationships among people, places and things.

Verbs With Prepositions
Many verbs require the use of a certain preposition.

When followed by an infinitive, many verbs require the preposition a before the infinitive. Some verbs do not.
Here is a rule that works in most situations:
| Does the first verb involve an ACTION? Use a before the
infinitive that comes after. |
Does the first verb happen only in the person's
mind (no action)? Don't use a. |
| bajar, entrar, ir, salir, subir, venir,
volver, aprender, ayudar, comenzar, empezar, enseñar, invitar, prepararse
AND SO ON Bajo a desayunar. I come
down to eat breakfast. |
preferir, querer, saber, desear, permitir,
intentar AND SO ON
Prefiero desayunar. I prefer to eat
breakfast. |
